How I developed my first video tutorial titled “Cold Call Mastery- In 5 Easy Steps.”

I conducted a needs analysis and concluded there is a need for an e-Learning course to help salespeople improve their cold calling skills. Data from Baylor University’s Keller Research Center’s 2011 survey shows that newly-trained salespeople often struggle to covert cold calls into product sales. A third of salespeople leave before their second year of employment without meeting their sales targets. Such low retention impacts company recruiting and increases training costs.

MY EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The aim of this e-Learning tutorial was to fill knowledge gaps in cold calling. The tutorial focuses on building confidence, persuasion techniques, and overcoming objections – key components of successful cold calling.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

• The completed tutorial is required to be about 3 minutes long.
• It can be a standalone course or a component of a larger digital resource.
• The design should be user-friendly, accessible and engaging.
• Any multimedia platform may be used.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

I’d previously written a storyboard for a 15-minute course on cold calling that I had planned to develop using Articulate Rise. I condensed this storyboard to fit a 3-minute time frame. I also edited it to make it more engaging to viewers. The 3-minute video tutorial I created was produced entirely on PowToon.

THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

I decided to produce the video tutorial into two parts.

First, I produced a 41 second video summarizing cold calling. This 41 second video was based on a PowToon template titled “Support Training”.

Next, I developed a lengthier video explaining the entire cold calling process. I used text to speech and selected PowToon AI voice narration for the second video. Once the voice narration was done, I used a total of about 19 PowToon slides to depict the cold calling process. Some of the slides used were PowToon template slides, others were imported. I cut, pasted, added and deleted words and sections as needed while trying to maintain viewer stimulation and engagement within each slide.

When completed, I merged the two videos together to form my three and a half minute video titled “Cold Call Mastery – in 5 Easy Steps”.
